I have a thing for books. I read avidly and sometimes when I want some inspiration for work, I often turn to books to try my hand at something new. Or simply practice old skills in new ways.
For this work, I redesigned the cover jacket for one my all-time favourite books by Kazuo Ishiguro (a nobel prize winner). As the main characters are young, the design aesthetics answer to the elements of youth with warm and bright tones and an illustrative lighheartedness along with the right touch of contrast. It helps build a balanced interplay with a layered and a more complex web of themes and human emotions in the storyline.
Every element of the design is hand crafted and designed.
The word 'SUN' from the title is recast as letter illustrations using themes from the story. The illustrations are individually conceived through analysis of the book's settings, emotions, characters and themes - the countryside, friendship between human and machine and a futuristic setting. They are then hand drawn and executed in Illustrator to retain their vector based sharpness. Simple shapes and gradients are used to add layers and depth in the image as a whole. A seamless visual flow through the back cover, spine to the front add vividness.
